| Max's Kansas City |
Many stories have been told, countless fables have been written, innumerable poems have been scribbled down and numerous songs have been sung about Max’s Kansas City. It was a home for dreams, not where they could come through, but where they actually existed. Empty of people the place looked like a taxi driver café – worn down and with its best years behind it. Yet within Max’s humble and tranquil shell lay something down right spectacular, a feeling of the future, then and now. All at once. David Bowie, Iggy Pop, the Velvet Underground, the New York Dolls, Ramones, Television, Suicide, Blondie, Talking Heads, Tom Waits, Bruce Springsteen and Mink DeVille. These were just some of the great musicians that frequently could be seen here, either performing or simply just hanging around drinking, laughing, sleeping, dancing or whatever they felt like. Besides music there were foremost other forms of artists that frequented this legendary abode. Among others were Robert Rauschenberg, Roy Lichtenstein, Philip Glass, William S. Burroughs, Allen Ginsberg, Robert Mapplethorpe and of course Andy Warhol and his chic entourage. But if dreams can be made, if they exist and have become reality, they can also be smashed, killed, severed and maimed and unfortunately that was what happened to many of the regulars at Max’s. Some of them ended up dead or without a joy of life at the inevitable end of this exciting and sparkling period. Even though it closed over thirty years ago the legacy lives on and is still an inspiration to this day. Most of us never got the chance to go there but just the thought of what went on there and what Max’s did for the young artists of that time is enough to forever be in awe.

War as an entity is always bad, horrible, atrocious and abominable. It strangles the soul with shiny arms of state aided metal. But out of something that horrifying must come some good, and so does it. Much of our day-to-day stuff like the internet and the Iphone, those things that helps us with our leisurely life style, comes from developments made by the military industrial complex. The most influential item to come out of that idea geyser are probably the Khakis, an invaluable and imperishable part of our contemporary urban uniform. The Khakis origin is from the British military in India in the middle of the nineteenth century. Inspiration comes from the native uniform worn by the Indian recruits and was cool enough in the heat and strong enough to endure hard usage. Material was from the beginning either linen or cotton but nowadays can also be made in cotton-synthetic blends. Although they have a long history and are an offspring from the military none of that matters, because they have since long made their own history and legacy. They’ve broken free from time and are now iconic and one of the most important parts of the preppy uniform. And have always been and will forever be one of the corner stones of the Whyred look, worn by such legends as Steve McQueen and Truman Capote. Shop chinos >>

| Cocky women, classy shoes |
Gents have been wearing the classic and tailored men’s shoe forever but there’s nothing that says women can’t wear them as well. Or nothing that says they don’t look better or more cocky on a woman’s slender foot. A men’s shoe is taken to new heights, given new layers and becomes peculiarly masculinely feminine on a woman. Elvis Presley sang “Walk a mile in my shoes” and that’s what we all should do. Put on a pair of minutely designed and perfectly handcrafted men’s shoes and stomp through the crowded streets of Mumbai or the barren twitten of the English countryside. Get lost in a foreign place, put on foot in front of the other and let the shoes take you anywhere. Fly high above the ordinary man on wings of smooth leather and make them look up at you enviously. Whishing they too had shoes like you, shoes that can make the world seem better and more at peace. A serene place where anything can happen as long as you let it. Shop Göthberg for women >>

| Alexandr Rodchenko - inspiration for the Spring / Summer 2012 collection |
At the start of the nineteenth century Russian culture was at its highest and most influential peak and among the avant-garde stood Rodchenko, waving the flag of artistic freedom, crying out for a new beginning and ignoring every dictatorial and inhumane hazard that was thrown at him. The painter and graphic designer, Alexandr Rodchenko, who started to work with photomontage and photography, is an inspiration when it comes to the colourful and extravagantly minimalistic combinations. The colours for the spring collection goes from earthy brownish, beige, nougat and copper brown to pigeon blue, mid-blue and navy. Cream and black represents the base colour together with Moscow red as contrast. Rodchenko worked with many of the great Russian artists and did among others the poster for the masterpieces “Man with a Movie Camera”, by the prolific Dziga Vertov, and “Battleship Potemkin”, by Sergei Eisenstein the founder of the highly experimental montage movement. But foremost he was a unique and expressive painter, sculptor and photographer that was the founder and an important, if no the most important, part of constructivism.

| The Trench coat – everlasting style |
The Trench coat is rumoured to date back as long as the 1850s, but came into fame during and after the First World War. It was an optional garment for the higher-ranking officers and it became popular among them to wear it when they were off service. Since then the Trench has gotten a life of its own and is always more or less fashionable but always the perfect choice for gentlemen and gentlewomen. Its been worn by such a diversified group off people as Humphrey Bogart, Katharine Hepburn, Jacques Tati, Alain Delon and an innumerable amount of femme fatales. Quite early on it became the alternative choice for the Mods, who wore the trench as an alternative to the fishtail parka. It don’t make no difference whether you’re Winston Churchill, Catherine Deneuve, Paul Weller, Kate Moss, or just anybody; this piece should always have a place in every human being’s wardrobe. Without the Trench coat the world would be a little less classy and a lot less stylish. Whyred's trench this spring is called Taisa and comes in black and nougat, Go to webshop >>

| Whyred + Laura |
Laura is a newsprint magazine that was created by Jared Leon and Johanna Heldebro in the spring of 2010 in New York. Johanna, who is a Swedish visual artist, and Jared, who is Canadian and has been working in music and writing, do everything together. They have, amongst other things, released records and played shows throughout North America and Europe with some of their favorite bands, as The Nymphets. They created Laura based on a set of shared ideas relating to mass and personal media, fandom and plurality. Their intention is to make something that is strong and detached and enthusiastic and jarring, on a range of levels, in its efforts at and approach to relating their subjects. Whyred and Laura have a surprise that we will reveal on Monday! Stay tuned!

| Crazy Diamond – opposites that inspire us this fall |
Opposites can be far away from each other or be contained inside one person. Genius or madman, creativity or insanity? Are they two sides of the same coin or are they completely different things? Is a genius a successful madman? A definition that we like is that a genius uses his madness constructively, whereas a madman will use his genius destructively. Syd Barret is a perfect example of the thin line between madman and genius. He was a musical pioneer, a singer-songwriter, guitarist, and painter. He wore tight jeans, had shaggy hair, worn-out shirts and toil-worn suits and millitary coats. After only seven years in the music business he shun away from the spotlight and dedicated the rest of his life to gardening and painting. The reason for his self-elected seclusion was the state of his mental health – he is rumoured to have been suffering from both schizophrenia and autism. In his brief seven years as a famous musician he founded and named Pink Floyd only to leave the band five years and three albums later. As a solo artist he managed to release two more albums before his mental state and heavy drug abuse forced him away into exile. Despite his difficulties and hardships he created his masterpieces with a seldom seen intensity and glow, nothing he ever did was less than original and brilliant – something that we all should aspire for and be inspired by. Get the Syd look: - Bergman millitary coat - Eddie blazer - Ronald mohair mix knitted sweater - Hirdwall boot - Tzar belt - Tiw scarf

| The parka and Whyred, an everlasting love affair |
As many a classical garments the parka has a strong and proud military heritage. The parka is a shield, a defence against the outer world. With it you can take on any obstacle and confront every evildoer on your path. For the mods it was and is an important part of the uniform and the entire cultural movement. It provides anonymity – yet still evokes the uniqueness in everyone – toughness and a strong feeling of fellowship. For us at Whyred the parka has always been one of the most important pieces of our collections and this fall we have a couple of different versions of this classic and immortal garment. First the two fishtail versions Highboy and Carter that originates from the American M-51 parka, which was first used during the Korean War. The second one is Warren, a more updated version without a hood and in thick luxurious wool. Read more about our parkas in our Parka Guide! >>>

| Brogue doesn’t equal style… it equals total control |
Brouge can in short be described as a shoe or boot with decorative perforations, but the short version misses all that is a brogue shoe. It’s classic and above the trends, the brogue is never out because it’s never been in, but is always right. One of our century’s biggest style icons Alain Delon was, and is, often seen wearing a pair of hand-made shoes with brogue details. As he is hunting down a lowlife in the Paris underground in Le samouraï or he is planning a jewel heist in Le cercle rouge he always looks impeccable and in total control – even though all hell is breaking loose around him. Whether or not it was the brogue shoes that helped him we dare not say, but why take a chance by not wearing a pair. This fall we at Whyred have two very different pair of brogue shoes; the austere loafer Franklin and the working-boot inspired Millard. Both are available in black and burgundy.

| The letterman jacket will always prevail |
Through the movies of John Hughes we have seen heartaches, love, tears, happiness, camaraderie, friendship and a lot of well-worn letterman jackets accompanied by great music – for example a Whyred favourite, The Psychedelic Furs, did the lead-song to one of John Hughes’ movies. Quite often the letterman jacket is worn by the misunderstood jock, hard and shallow on the outside but inside he’s a poet longing to come out. This particular jacket has been around for a long while and has a very strong and proud history and this fall we have made our own interpretation of it. Our version of the letterman jacket or, as it is sometimes called, the varsity jacket shines like an imaginary enchanted forest, it is greener than the brightest emerald yet still sober and calm. It is called Arion and is already available in our webshop and stores! Show comments » |

| Redefining style. David Bowie – The Thin White Duke |
A dandy is a man who places particular importance upon physical appearance, refined language, and leisurely hobbies, in a nonchalant way. David Bowie is a fashion icon, the ideal example of dandyism and always a big inspiration for the Whyred man. He redefined popular music and our definition of manliness and his career has always been marked by continual reinvention, musical innovation and striking visual presentation.
For the album Station to Station Bowie took on the persona of The Thin White Duke. During this period he was less flamboyant than earlier but he was more impeccably well dressed than ever before. Bowie – with a white shirt, black trousers and a black waistcoat – looked like a mad aristocrat and was out-of-this-world stylish.

| Fierce and powerful – the Whyred woman |
The Whyred woman is raw and androgynous, independent and strong with an offhand kind of luxury. One day she gets out of bed and puts on an ex boyfriend’s worn-down jeans and wrinkled shirt only to put on a sharp suit the next day. Combining her own womanly sexiness and soft materials with the sharpness of a man’s outfit she’s fierce, confident and unbeatable. Charlotte Gainsbourg and Tilda Swinton are the perfect Whyred women – they are powerful and androgynous and at the same time feminine and sexy. They could chose to crush someone either with their sharp-edged claques, overwhelming talent or a massive blow. Show comments » |

| Whyred + Liberty is a must wear situation |
Since 1875 Liberty has been the epitome of luxury and great design. The founder Arthur Lasenby Liberty was integral in the development of Art Nouveau through his encouragement of new and exciting designers. Liberty’s advanced and unique prints have been made by some of this century’s most influential and bold designers, inter alia William Morris, Yves Saint Laurent and Vivienne Westwood. At Whyred we have always loved the Liberty vibe, its one-of-a-kind feeling and extravagant minimalism. For as long as we can remember the Liberty prints have been a welcome and always returning guest of ours. This season is no different and you can find Liberty print “Emerald” on several of our styles. From this fall you can not only find Liberty at Whyred, you can also for the first time find Whyred at Liberty, in their department store in London! Liberty also stocks, alone in UK, a large assortment of our bags. Show comments » |

| Intense Elegance |
In the Whyred fall collection, Intense Elegance, extreme opposites attract and intertwine. Baroque and Georgian architecture (maximalism and minimalism) are contrasting architectural styles that, when put together, create interesting and exiting tensions. On the outside many of our creations for the fall has the expression of minimalism (long and lean as the Georgian windows), but when you look at the interiors the maximalism (extravagant and detailed) appears. The insides are tailored and one of a kind – maybe colourful or with a beautiful baroque pattern. In our everyday lives architecture is one of a few art forms that constantly inspire us. Great original designs, like a beautiful building or a glamorous dress, has the ability to affect our senses and life in a devout and unique way and that is something that we always strive for at Whyred. According to Walter Benjamin copies can never have the same influence because when something is reproduced its aura is shattered and thereby we become alienated from the work of art. A copy has no value, only that which is pure, genuine and authentic can have an aura and totally immerse us. That is what’s most important for us - art must make the wearer or viewer forget everything else, if only for a brief but ever so wonderful moment. Show comments » |

Belmondo got his beakthrough in Jean Luc Godard and Truffaut's film noir "Breathless" (1960) and is a true style icon of the film noir era of the 60's. One of the most wonderful dream pop bands out of the shoegaze/indie golden era, around 89-91, were the legendary New York trio Galaxie 500. They managed through their short career to release three albums of full bliss and hazy melodies, The 1989 album On Fire realeased on Rough Trade being perhaps their finest moment. Singer Dean Wareham works today with various projects including as a film composer, most notably on the Noah Baumbach cult-hit film The Squid an the Whale.
